The weekend

Wow...that one went by quick...the week-end that is! On Saturday, I did get Emil to help me turn the mattress, then I changed the sheets, did a little laundry, and did a tidy up in the bathrooms before going for a Nordic walking stik walk..after I walked Silky. By the time I got home and ate brunch, the afternoon was there, and our new neighbours Mike and Alyssa, were knocking at our door to return a drywall knife. They are doing a total reno of their new house ( the brown one to the Nelson (west) of us). Well, we had a drink, then some snacks, and another drink, and before you know it, it was dark out.

I had put a semi frozen Toupie ham in the oven and it was no where near cooked till somewhere around 8:00 pm... You could say that the evening was shot, before we finally sat down and ate dinner.

Sunday morning, however was only the beginning of another similar day... cleaned a little, vacuumed, did some laundry, then Emil and I cooked up a nice ham and egg and hashbrown breakfast, using the fresh and yummy eggs that Emil collected from Lynn and Rick's chickens while they were in Kelowna.

Ashley and Deb, our other rather new neighbours ( Bill's daughter), joined us for breakfast. Guess I should have had some champagne for the orange juice, but we survived without it!
Everyone filled up with the essential kind of breakfast, then topped it off with one of the date muffins I made the night before. After we were all plumped up, we decided to go x-country skiing out to the BAlfour golf course. It was still frozen enough that we could slip slide right along easily on top of the snow, even tho it hadn't been tracked. Deb and Ashley prefer snowshoeing, s o they shoed and we skiied as best we could , choosing any one of many tracks to follow, or to make our own.

Right off the bat, we had to navigate down a little hill just beyond the golf course, and both Emil and I crashed! Too funny! That is one thing about snow shoes, you seem to stay upright!
We slogged our way, or should I say...I slogged my way through all nine holes on the front nine. Only thing we were missing was the golf clubs! Ashley is like the energizer bunny, and Deb hopped along without any signs of the huffing and puffing that Emil and I had!

We opted to quit after the first nine, but last week-end Deb and Ash also navigated their way through the entire back nine...made me tired just thinking about it!

So instead of going to the BBI, Deb and Ash invited us over...That was nice...we were tuckered out....well, I was tuckered out. My knee and ankle aren't being kind to me these days, so I was happy to veg out for a few minutes.

That, however didn't last long!

Ashley brought out his Wii game for his new huge flatscreen, and before you know it, we were all bowling in the living room. Of course, one doesn't really bowl, but how you hold the Wand thingy and when you release the button, all has considerable bearing on the way your bowling bowl goes down the alley.

Emil and Ashley had Strike after strike, and spare after spare, while Deb did pretty good, and lets just say, I struggled... I broke a hundred on game two, but that was quite pathetic. Seems that even in my old worst days of bowling, I could bowl about 150 .

After two games of bowling, my wrist felt like it was going to be in a permanent droop. It was excrutiatingly painful and aching...still is. Imagine if it had of been a real bowling ball? Ha!

So the fellows, continued to play golf, and we all continued to munch, as Deb brought out one delicious snack after the next.

Deb's daughter, Cait, is a hairdresser, and she cut my hair last Thursday, s o she continued along with the process and foiled my hair at Deb's. So we ate some more and drank some more, and the guys were still golfing and the Academy awards had begun... another day, zapped out from under me! Finally we made it back home somewhere around eight o'clock and pretty much, went to bed after we had some ham...always seem to need real food, even if we were stuffed with snackie-poos.

Oh yes, I talked to Joyce, and she made it home safe and sound after a huge trip to Virginia's and then to Derricks...all by bus! An avalanche near Golden, kept them waiting in the bus for three hours... how awful!

The kids all seem to be doing fine and Emil is basking in retirement mode. He is all excited to bring his boat back home ( to Peter's) now that it has been fixed up. As Cheryl says...B.O.A.T stands for BRING ON ANOTHER THOU!

Chris and Carolyne are on their way to the Dominican to exactly where we went...They fly out tomorrow for two weeks. I hope they love it as much as we did...the temp is around 28*...so it should be balmy.

Have a good one...thanks to everyone who has replied about Emil's party... we will figure out accomodation when I see how many can't fit in our house. The Balfour Beach Inn will probably be able to give us a pretty good rate if we need other rooms. I'll check with the owner in another month or so. We'll have lots of room for camping and rigs.

French Pink Willows

Aren't these delightful?

After a week in some water, the cut pussy willow will first turn pink, then later start to grow, until the catkin is almost two inches long...then it breaks out in yellow pollen for the bees. Unfortuneately, I relieved the entire tree of every pussy willow branch,s o the bees are out of luck!

Grandma Shumey's Date Bran Muffins

Easily mixed up in a food processor

Not too sure about these new silicon muffin cups, so I didn't fill them too full. I sprayed the muffin cups with Pam ,first.

Cute new mini baker that Sonia gave me for Christmas . I sprayed that with pam too, before filling it with the left over batter.

Voila... all done...and yummy!

First, chop nuts a bit in the food processor then take out and set aside.
Second, heat about a cup of dates in the microwave for 30 seconds...makes them much easier to chop. Chop into small bite sized pieces and reserve for later.

Heat oven to 375*
Spray muffin cups with PAm

So back to the food Processor...

put in 1/2 cup of margarine
1 cup brown sugar
2 tblsp of Karo syrup ( corn syrup)
1 egg.
Once it is all in the food processor, give it a whirl to cream up the ingredients nice and smooth.

A 4 cup measuring cup works ideal...Put in 2 cups of bran buds, and 1 cup of white flour. Stir a bit to make an even blend. Add 1/2 tsp of salt. Stir altogether and set aside.

In a one cup pyrex measure cup, pour in a cup of milk and add 2 tspns or a little more of white vinegar to make sour milk and then just before you use it, add 1 tsp. of baking soda. This will foam up, so be ready to dump a bit into your creamy mixture.

Now, you are going to add wet and dry ingredients to your creamed mixture, alternately. I dump in about half the flour and bran mixture, then half the milk, then give the processor a whirl, then I add the remainder and give it another whirl. You don't need to over mix this,as it is muffins, not a cake that we are making:-)
Lastly add your chopped nuts ( walnuts or pecans) and add the chopped dates ( or raisins). give it another whirl and then you are ready to fill the muffin cups. I had a little extra, so I used the mini-baker.

Bake at 350 for ten minutes, and then lower heat by ten degrees, and continue baking until they are cooked...about 20 minutes ,more or less. Take out of oven and immediately dump out of
Silicon baking cups. Those are some fun and come in cute colours and are easy to store and clean up quick. No need to bake in a muffin pan, apparently....just on a cookie sheet.

The Great Lunar Eclipse...

Emil and I took it all in, right from the bedroom window! Actually, I nearly drove off the highway several times on the way home, just trying to get a glimpse of the moon slowly getting munched away by earth's shadow.
The photos above are in reverse order, so this one above is of the moon as it was coming out of the eclipse, taken from my studio balcony.

I love this one, because I caught the Saturn and Regulus, framing the eclipsing moon.

This is about half way through the eclipse.

Finally, this is the beginning of the phase after the total eclipse, when the moon is starting to light up again. Much to our surprise, the light crept in from the bottom...seemed all wrong, but what the hay do we know?
The next one won't happen until 2010, in December, so I hope everyone caught a glimpse of it tonight, because it will be along time until the next one! For some outstanding photos, go to Spaceweather.com

Lunar Eclipse

I nearly forgot to tell everyone that on Wednesday the 2oth, there will be a full Lunar eclipse...the last one we will get to see until 2010!

It starts at 5:43 PST and will be in full darkness around 7:03pm. Check here for a nice animated look at the moon eclipsing.

LUNAR ECLIPSE: On Wednesday night, February 20th, the full Moon will turn a delightful shade of red and possibly turquoise, too. It's a total lunar eclipse-the last one until Dec. 2010. Sky watchers in Europe, the Americas, parts of the Middle East and Africa are favored for good views of the two-hour event. Visit http://spaceweather.com for full coverage including maps and timetables, live webcasts and discussion.

Nordic Skiwalkers

These are my new Ski walkers...I am taking the photo, hence the odd angle. The square holder is removed before one starts to walk.

I am happy to report that the snow has melted a bit since this photo was taken

Light weight poles and cork grips with good Solomon Swix gloves to rest your hand in. No need to put the death grip on the poles.

The bottoms of the poles come with both a rubber grip and a metal point for the snow and ice.

So far, I have been out nearly every morning since we arrived back from the Dominican. I only have about a half hour to spare in the am to walk, but that is good for now, when the roads are turning to an ice slick. When the weather improves, I might be able to work it up to an hour. On Sunday, I walked to the ferry and back...a long walk for my gimpy ankle and knee...maybe a little too long, but a stint in the hot-tub, ironed out the kinks. On Friday night and Saturday, I had forgotton to take my glucosomine and chondroiten that I faithfully take every day. I think that is why my knee and ankle were worse than usual. Other than those minor issues, I love my skiwalkers and hope to improve my walking skills. ( Like I didn't walk miles every day when I was a teenager!) ( Of course that was a few years ago!)
Oh yes, for joggers and walkers out there who own an Ipod, one can download great electronic beat music for walking or jogging to at Podrunner.
You may subscribe to it in Itunes, and you'll receive a a new hour of music every few days... Lots of fun!

My cousin Ed came to visit me today at the store...Yahoo... That was so nice ! We had some laughs and a cup of tea and discussed retirement...Looks like it is treating him pretty good! Thanks Ed for dropping in! You made my day!

Happy Birthday to Robert! The big 14 today! Hard to believe he is getting all grown up. Hope you had a good one!
Time for beddy bye...the morning comes early!

Week-end

Soleil moved into the dog's bed in the living -room. Silky's nose
was out of joint big-time, but the old cat wasn't moving!

Our big Texas Hold'em game on Saturday night.
Emil and Bill split the pot sometime after midnight!

Sunday was a gorgeous day with a beautiful sunset kissing our mountains.

Now, if only the snow would melt......

The week-end went by so fast, I felt like I needed another week-end to rest up!
Okay, I was going to write something intelligent...
Oh, Yes... I made these little Spinach BAlls from Correna's Justice Dept. Cook Book for the Poker PArty... Seems like everyone liked them , but maybe me:-). I think I would have liked them with cranberries and gravy on them:-) Anyhow, they are pretty good nibblers to bring to a party.

Here is the recipe...

Big Hit Spinach Balls

2 pkgs frozen chopped spinach- thawed, drained and squeezed out
1 pkg ( 2 cups) stuffing mix that you have prepared and let cool
1 cup Parmasean cheese
1/4 cup melted butter
4 green onions chopped
1 red pepper finely chopped
3 eggs

Make stuffing according to directions , let cool
Preheat oven to 350*
Combine all ingredients and shape into small walnut sized balls. Bake on greased baking sheet for 15 minutes. Serve with dijon mustard or your favourite creamy dip.

Okey, I have to try for earlier bed... just too pooped in the am.

So before I say nighty -night... I want to wish Robert a Happy 14th birthday tomorrow...Holy tummoli... he's getting all growed up... Kaleigh will be next!

Oh-oh

Looks like Silky wanted to play dress-ups!
Too funny...She was walking down the hall like an alien was attached to her bum...turns out it was only my bra, but it looked pretty hilarious anyhow.
Speaking of Silky, Silken Lauman ,our own Olympic Rowing champ was in our store today...and yes, I did name Silky after her ( Her official name, that is,...Silken!)
Silken is promoting Child's play..unorganized play, such as playing in parks, with the supervision of parents, or free play in school gymnasiums all across BC on Friday nights, when schools leave the gym open. She said that in Burnaby, she has a gym where there are parents and kids coming that speak a total of 83 different languages!!! How remarkable is that? She says that child obesity is the highest it has ever been in British Columbia ! She intends to keep on inspiring parents to get their kids back outside... to play in the parks. If each parent takes one night a week, to oversee the kids play, then kids could make use of PArks again. In the meantime, her initiative to open the gyms up to kids and parents on Friday nights is proving successful in the 11 or so schools where it has begun, in the Lower Mainland. On her tour up to Nelson, she has several speaking engagements motivate parents and kids to find new(old) ways to incorporate exercise into the kid's lifestyles....without having organized, costly sports activities, that many kids are not able to afford. Way to go Silken! So ,for all of you parents out there, with all that spare time on your hands...get the kid down to the school gym and let the kids run amuck!

More Magazine...for women over forty and those who can't remember anything

More Magazine
If you haven't broused a copy of this relatively new mag, then I suggest you pick up a copy and enjoy it from cover to cover... I like the section called Body and Mind. It gives you tips on how to know when to be worried about memory lapses...You should be worried if things like your car keys turn up in unlikely spots like the sugar-bowl... Go to alzheimers.ca and click on "common Questions"
If you think memory loss has something to do with decreased levels of hormones...you are right. Estradiol, a particular type of estrogen,,is produced in decreased amounts during menopause and Estradiol is produced in abundance..as much as 100 times as much during pregnancy...Studies have shown, tho, not conclusive, that the estradiol affects the "working"memory...the one you need when you are trying to recall where exactly you parked the car. Not all Hormone replacement therapy contains estradiol. Premarin, for example, may actually double the odds of increased memory loss. So too, may a bad knock on the old head, so buckle up, wear a seatbelt, and take care of the noggin, by wearing a helment if you are indulging in fast neck-breaking sports.

The next article is from women who have had about enough with the cancer thing..being a "Survivor", wearing cutsie pink ribbons, drinking pink colas and eating pink yogurt and contributing to one more Relay for Life. They are sick of friends phoning them every time one of their relatives comes down with cancer, and they are sick of hearing about so and so's friend who died from the exact same cancer as what you have...at the same age , no less. They are sick of insensitive people who ask if you are "Done with all that" Done like a cake...are you ever done once you have cancer?

Also, there are fashion tips and down to earth stories about real women... so I like the Magazine.

Being away for two weeks, put me way behind on reading my MAgazines. I read at least four today to do a little catching up. I read them while I was having a nice Jacuzzi with my 2nd NAture Muscle soak, to loosen up my stiff neck muscles. It isn't very easy to read and drink a cup of tea and eat an orange, all while you are having a soak in the tub, but I did it,and the magazines are a bit soggy, but who cares...at least none of them fell in the water. Last time, my good Metropploitan Home took a dive and the pages started dropping off one by one from both the front and the back of the magazine, until it was only a slim edition with half of each story. The rest of the pages were in a mangled mess as I fished them out of the water and tossed them on my bathroom floor. Needless to say, that magazine never made it to the doc's office.

Oh yes, back to the reason my neck was so sore... I went cross country skiing, or should I say Ski -hiking yesterday with Leah and Sharon and Bud and SueG. We went up to the BAlfour golf course at 11:00am and it was snowing pretty good. Because Leah and I arrived first and no -one else was in site, we just took off from the main building and headed towards number one tee box.

This makes me wonder now, where exactly did the pond go that used to be right there?

ANyhow, the snow was so incredibley deep and no-one had skiied there for days that Leah was breaking trail in the fresh snow and I was plodding behind, By the third fairway, she said you lead. If I wasn't the size of a tuna, it would be easy to lift up the knees and try to keep the skis on top of the snow, but for some reason, probably related to weight, the tips of my skis were plunging into the snow, looking for hell, I suppose. In two strides, my skis were buried, skiing under the snow, instead of on top. This was not x-country skiing, but more like ski-shoeing, if there is such a thing.
After a half hour of plodding, Sharon finally came along, followed by another couple, and then Bud and Sue. By then, we were under the tree canopy where the snow was less than a foot deep. Leah had to wax up her skiis, s o we let the other couple plough ahead... HA! They cut their trip short and headed back to the parking lot!

Bud and Sharon led, leaving a perfect imprint with snow a foot high in a perfect ridge between the two ski tracks. I think the ridge of excess snow gave me problems...or the Tuna factor, because we had hardly started, and over I went.."Ploop" right into the snowbank. I had to disengage the ski from my boot , before I could begin to get upright. Even this small task, while lying on your side, is not all that easy!

We had to eventually navigate uphill ,thru what turned out to be a ditch or hole under the snow. I slid backwards and the back ends of my skiis beacame firmly planted in two feet of wet snow, with the fronts sticking upwards ,until I toppled over. Again, I had to disengage shoe from ski to get myself stood up...on hill, and in a ditch. I carried my ski to the top, and put it on up there.... then skiied ten feet and lost my balance and flipped backwards into the snowbank...onto my back, skis under me. I needed Sharon to give me a hand to stand up this time... Everyone was laughing hysterically when I yelled" The Tuna is down!"

I'm grateful , to Bud, as he led us to the road finally.
Once on the packed flat surface, the wet snow packed onto the bottom of my both skiis, and as I tried to knock off the snow from one ski, the other ski magically took off and "PHLattt" there I was , being the tuna for one last time... and my butt hurt! I suspect my neck and shoulder muscles all worked harder than they ever had in ten years to get myself upright so many times...hence the need for the soak in the tub tonight! And I do feel much better, thanks!
The nice thing about skiing with this pleasant group is that we always go for a hearty lunch aftwards... so off to the BBI we all went and had some warm food.... to help with the chilly willies.

Our dinner guests cancelled last night and instead, Deb and Ashley came over around 9;00pm or later, for a rip snorting game of Train! We had so many laughs... and I won...Yippee! We didn't call it a night till nearly 2:00 in the morning...crazy folk!

Today was kind of a slow day, but I got about ten or more pieces of mail, including two parcels all ready to mail out tomorrow, on my way to work... so keep and eye on your mailbox! I said ten pieces of mail...not thirty!

Tomorrow I have to head into Trail for an appointment, then we ( cause Emil is coming with me) are going to visit Lynn and Bob for dinner... How nice! I haven't seen her since before we went away.

Emil is sick of snow removal and needs to get out of the cabin, I think!

Speaking of Emil, I am having a retirement/birthday party for him on Sunday,June 29th.... so get your tent or trailer all ready and come on up for the weekend. The party will be on the Sunday and we'll play some beach games , if we have a beach, and do some tubing if we have a dock... No gifts, just come and have fun. He'll be glad to see all of our special friends and rellies, especially those who couldn't make it to the HEU retirement party. That is the week-end that runs into the July long week-end , so it might be a long party...bring extra refreshments ! I'll send out a reminder or give a call before then,...this is just a heads up. Looking forward to it... Keep all of your retirement jokes for then! Have a good week...don't know when I'll next be back...

I have this much to say every day, but tiredness prevails after work and dinner and then I peeter out...and Facebook is draining my energy... so many things to check out... I like the way I can message real quick, but I can do without a zillion of the aps. Don't be offended if I don't participate in the booze mail and that stupid dog and then the CTRL ALT 4 to see who is looking at your site... what a bunch of bullsh*t. That just closes Facebook. booo-hiss-boo . That dog has been deleted!

Webopedia: Text Messaging, Chat Abbreviations & Smiley Faces

Webopedia: Text Messaging, Chat Abbreviations & Smiley Faces

Well, It is a long story that brought me to the text messaging page, but what the hay. Morgan has a new cell phone, so I thought it would only be proper to send him a text message...Of course, he doesn't want anything to do with it, but Joyce is an inquisitive sort who was trying to get it all figured out...but not just yet. Either my message didn't send correctly, or it didn't get received by their phone... so here I am, looking up text messaging advice. I know tht using the T9 feature makes it fsaster to type out the words, but I can't remember how to scroll to the next available word... so I kept getting "good" ,instead of "home". Virginia told me how, but it looks like that tidbit of info fell into the dim zone,as I can't for the life do it.
So Joyce cooked me a yummy dinner tonight...stuffed roasted chicken, complete with cranberries and gravy...Who can resist that? It was all delicious, as was the apple pie and ice cream for desert... Yummy...Thank-you Joyce. It snowed all the way home, thus I am pretty much ready for my beddy. I might check my email then sayZZZZ...Have a good one..
Love you all...

Back home to Snow...Whahhh

We flew into Calgary to -28* weather on Wednesday morning at 2:00 am. Our, saviour, Lorraine was waiting there since 11:30 TO PICK US UP! Thank goodness she brought our winter coats and boots! It was BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR cold! We had a drink and chatted, then fell to sleep for a few hours...and headed out by 9:00am or so. Luckily, the roads weren't too terrible and it was snowing in a few spots, but the car held the road and we kept on a moving and caught the ferry at 5:20. Just a reminder, that if you are at Creston, you need at least one hour and fifteen minutes to make it ot the ferry at Crawford Bay. Longer, if it is summer and there is lots of trailers on the road.
My little doggy was adopted by Deb and Ashley. Apparently, Silk only missed me for one day, then turned filkle and became Deb's dog. She was pretty excited when I returned, tho. I was happy to see her again, myself.
I worked the next morning and Friday, and thus, it is only today that I am beginning to feel human...caught up on a ton of laundry and went for a walk with my new Nordic walking sticks... Now these are a humdinger...takes the pressure right off your knees and makes you feel like you could walk ten times farther than ever before. I am going to try walking to help me lose that sack of sugar I am packing on my belly. I'm not so good at not eating, so exercise will have to be the way to get the deed done. My first effort today was encouraging. I'll keep you posted.
So back to the trip...It was phenomenal! We had such a wonderful time...the heat was good , the food was great, the hospitality and entertainment second to none, and the people were fabulously friendly. The resort was spic and span and best of all, you felt very safe and secure. I'll load up a web albumn with about a hundred photos. First I want to label them. So that should be done tonight or tomorrow. In the meantime, I need to hit the shower, and then go pick up the cat post at Lindas'. She and Ed were kind enough to look after Annette's cat, and we have the feline back, but the post wouldn't fit in Emil's car...so...see you later...

The reindeer are buried and Frosty can't be seen

More snow than we have ever had

The chefs did a carving demo witht he fruits and veggies and the maids showed their folding abilities with the towels...
