The Big Fishermen

Making Sandwiches for the big Derby

Which one to pick??? Something that will catch a great big fish!

Oh Look...we hooked something!!!

I'll get it into the net!

Look, something is on our line... Its a fish," No, Its a Bird!"
Yep,they hooked a Seagull! Brought it right into the boat to remove the hook from its bill.

Warren, sleeping on the job... no wonder they only caught a few juvenile fish!

Chlorophyllum rhacodes (MushroomExpert.Com)

Chlorophyllum rhacodes (MushroomExpert.Com)
Called Lipiota rhacodes, this mushroom is edible, but is also easily confused with a mushroom that gives the most poisonings in the USA every year... Best not to eat it and indulge it with your camera. Thanks to Joyce for looking it up in her mushroom dictionary!
Now here are a a few mushroom jokes...

Did you hear that the French are such mushroom lovers that they eat dried slices of regular button mushrooms with milk in the morning like we eat cereal?.....they call it the "breakfast of champignons".

A woman announces to her friend that she is getting married for the fourth time."How wonderful! But I hope you don't mind me asking what happened to your first husband?""He ate poisonous mushrooms and died.""Oh, how tragic! What about your second husband?""He ate poisonous mushrooms too and died.""Oh, how terrible! I'm almost afraid to ask you about your third husband.""He died of a broken neck.""A broken neck?""He wouldn't eat the mushrooms."

Sonia at the SARS ( Search and Rescue ) Meet and Greet

Enlarge this photo, or look closely to see what the Irish SARS team found in the middle of Beacon Hill Park in Victoria... Look closely...it is on the left with a trophy on top! They came First Place after searching all over Victoria for a most unusual object... Sure as heck,,,they found this parking meter in the middle of the park... Pretty funny eh? This is a group from Ireland who are all on the Coast Guard there.

Here's Sonia with a couple of the Irish boys ...and the winning Parking Meter!
Search and Rescue people from all over the world are convening for this special convention in Victoria.

Know these Mushrooms?

Found in the meadow next to our property, these aromatic mushrooms have dense stocks and have perfect white flesh with fins under the cap in the bigger mushrooms that have popped open. The little mushroom ( about an inch and a half in diameter...is pure white and dense inside, much like a store bought mushroom) .These grow in grass in many of the fields nearby. They just keep on growing until the top of the mushroom is the size of a dinner plate. At this stage, they look and smell good enough to eat, but as we all know...don't eat what you don't know... so I will sastify myself with photos of them for now, unless some knowledgeable person comes to my rescue. They seem to grow in bunches of three or more and are about 5.5 inches to 6 inches tall. They pop out of the grass and are often unseen under the leaves.

Cute as a button mushroom!

Thanks Sonia

Ashley, Sarah, & Maddie

Annette and Sonia

Kaleigh
Thanks Sonia...I borrowed a few pics off your facebook...thought everyone would like to see my girls!
Soooo, it was kind of a dull day at work, until we heard a big crash outside. I looked up the street but couldn't see anything, except for a Neptune truck, parked next to Wait's news, where it usually unloads it's cargo. I din't see people running or anything,so I went back into the store. two minutes later, a customer came in and said that the Neptune truck actually took out the light standard on the corner at Wait's News.
"Oh-Oh!"
When we looked out , there was the firetruck, the city, the police, and numerous lookie-lous, all staring down at the cross walk ,which now was the landing spot for the beautiful heritage light standard which used to have lovely big white globes hanging off it. Now the globes were knocked off and there lay the black light standard, and there was all the wires sticking oddly out of both the conduit on the sidewalk, and the lamp post base, and then there was a circle of uniformed people from every city department, surrounding the casualty of Neptune. Yep, the light post was down, and here we are, all looking at it like a corpse, wondering what the hell to do next....for the next 45 minutes, it seemed.
They finally brought in a crane and lifted the dead lamp post off the street and onto a truck and then they set up neat little three foot high four way stop signs. And thats how the day went in Nelson...a little amusement for me on a dull day.....
Emil roasted the country spareribs with BBQ sauce and made the slad, so I came home to a yummy smelling house and a dinner ready to eat.. All in all , agood day.
Tonight, Annette wrote her big exam up at UVic...I'll be waiting to hear from her. This is torwards her Canadian Financial Planning certification, that will come after one more exam... Good Luck Annette!

Happy Monday!

Joyce snapped this as she was driving, by the looks of it...en route to Golden from Alberta. This is the approach to the new bridge that just opened a few weeks ago.

Here is the new bridge on Highway 1,east of Golden somewheres... Too bad we don't have one of those crossing the lake to Harrop! tee-hee! Thanks Joyce for the photos!

Well, the good news is that the parcel I sent to the kids, arrived today... yippee. I think I'll have to add a signature to it in the future, so someone has to sign for it. I was having a bird, thinking that maybe someone else was enjoying the jewellery!

Not much else happening...It was a foggy start to the day and then it wound up a gorgeous one all day... we can't have enough of these at this time of the year!

Okey dokey...whats new with you? I think it is soon time for bed..even tho, I have ten things I could do. I bought a few new photo frames and have the pics laid out...maybe tomorrow morning I can actually get them together, then work on where to hang them. Joyce also brought me some Ikea frames back from Alberta. I best think about printing out some of those old photos to get those all fixed up.. and then to dream up a place to hang them.... I need more walls!

good night...remember to check out hte Usedkootenays.com site if you have anything to buy or sell.

More pics of Everyone

Thanksgiving at Nadine and Dicks...Note who's carving the turkey! She was trained well!

the ugly roads Joyce faced on her trip to Edmonton...This occurred on the Salmo Creston...a few Tuesdays ago when the weather turned ugly

Kendra and Mackenzie...buddies

Gramma Joyce with Jamie and Ethan...cute eh?
Thanks to Joyce and Lynn for passing along photos for me. Certainly is great to see all the little grandkids, and my own kids of course!
Sounds like Joyce had a pretty nice trip to Edmontonchuk and then to Red Deer and on to Kamloops to visit all the kids and the kidlets.
Makes me want to go see my own kidlets!

So today was another perfect day in the hood. I didn't exactly jump out of bed this morning, but that was ok for a Sunday. I talked to Sonia nd Annette and then to Joyce...That was half the morning gone! Good to catch up on all the news. The bad news was that my parcel to the kids never arrived, even tho the traking number said it did. They didn't even get ANY mail that day! None came on Friday am either, then mysteriously some mail appeared in their mailbox later on, Friday evening. Looks liek their mail may be going to someone else's mailbox. Boo-hiss . I hope they do the right thing and return the package.

I filed a ton of mail today and got rid of 2006 out of my filing cabinet...that alone, allowed me to file the new stuff... Holy cats...just way too much paper. Maybe e-posting the bills to me, might be better. Like why AM I keeping every blinking hydro and telephone bill, anyhow????
Finally I made it out to my garden and fought witht he weeds again. I didn't get it entirely cleared, nor tdid I get through all of the weeds in the strawberry patch, but I did enough to allow me to cover the whole garden in new black plastic, plus I netted a few more potatoes. Had those for my Thanksgiving dinner tonight...the one I missed while being away last week-end! This wasn't exactly a giant turkey dinner, but it was roasted chicken with McCubbins stuffing, fresh made cranberry sauce, turnip , mashed potaotoes and gravy and som Pillsbury do-biscuits. Emil made the salad and although it was late, we did enjoy the yummy dinner. I put the (made) stuffing down in the bottom of a large casserole dish...sort of heaped it in the middle, then split the chicken open down the middle of the back, and layed it over the stuffing . I added some water, then roasted it,always making sure there was some water in the bottom of the casserole so that the stuffing wouldn't burn up. In about an hour, it was all cooked and yummy.
Ok, time to go have a bath in some 2nd Nature Muscle soak... same remedy I suggested Morgan use... He had a little incident today that netted him some scrapes and bruises. Luckily he didn't break any bones, but I guess he is a hurting puppy. The Muscle soak is awesome...think I'll do that now...Swing the tv around so I can catch the end of Desperate Houswives while I soak!

Nice day,nice night

Hello everyone..Sorry I haven't been in blog mode the past week or so...just too many things on the go and...and I have had the dreaded cold. It is now on its way out, which is a good thing. So wasn't it an awesome day outside today? The sun was up and shining and we were outside a little after ten. I hauled up the hoses and sprinklers from the garden finally..We had a little frost last night, thus it was time.
I spent over three hours in my garden and did a lot,but it still needs lots of homework. I don't know if the alf- alpha weeds came from the manure or the straw, but holy christopher! The roots are longer than a parsnip and had to be half dug out to get them out of the ground. Lets just say it was rather back breaking and there are still more, all integrated with my strawberry plants which I would like to try to salvage, since I planted them new last year. 2008,technically will be the year that I get the best strawberries...if they are purged of weeds!

After my back couldn't take it anymore, I came up for a pop and then progressed to the Walnut trees. Surprisingly, they both looked like the past...initially, many walnuts, and then it looks like there are hardly any.. I am sure that last year, the whiskey jacks and squirrels hauled off most of them. Things are different this year...we have NUTS! Yea!.. Morgan suggested to use the pruner to waggle the tree limbs and that is what did. Kabonk! Off the nogan a few times, but the the nuts in their pods came down like a bad a hail storm. Then it was a task to shuck them of their husks, and pick up all the nuts.

More backbreaking as I stomped and picked and then finally cleaned up the mess and the leaves..seems as tho the leaves and nuts fall at the same time! I amassed one nearly full bucket of lovely walnuts. Our first real nut harvest! Hmmm...lets see, once they are cracked open, I'll be lucky to have a sandwhich bag full of the nuts! Can you believe that the tree has been growing there for well over ten years, and this is the first real crop!

We headed for the hot-tub, once the nuts were picked up. Emil had mowed the lawn and the two of us had sore backs by this time. We opened up the hot-tub and climbed in for a half hour. It felt very good! Oh yes, I forgot to mention that in the process of shaking the trees, I was stung by a badassed wasp on the inside of my upper arm. You should see it now...swollen and red down to my elbow. Where he stung me, it was inflamed with a little bubble of yuchy stuff.
I didn't see any stinger, but picked away at it anyhow and put on some polysopporan. I think I'll try some aloe vera cream before bed.

Tonight, thanks to Chris and Carolyne for an early Xmas present, we forayed into the city for the grand wine tasting event at the Grand hotel... How very cool. The entire first floor of the hotel was transformed into the wine master's dream come true... In every room, and every nook and cranny, there were representatives from probably every Okanagan winery, plus a few from the Napa valley and Trail's ne and only. In addition to probably over a hundred wine reps, with not less than five kinds of wine each, there was also the best selection of appies and deserts in every room.
Now get this , they even had the kitchen opened as one of the wine gallies..so here you could watch the chef prepare appetizers such as ,spring rolls, skewered chicken, mushroom tarts, deep fried prawns in a crunchy batter. Lets just say, the food was extraordinary ... breaded oysters, filet minon chunks, in wine and served with a peppercorn sauce...then there were the scallops in butter and lemon..YUM....and at the other end of the hotel, in the banquet room, a chef was frying up giant tiger prawns... By 9:00, I was too full to eat those, but Emil had a couple.
Allen's gourmet chocolates had a chocolate fountain that you could dip fresh sticks of pineapple or fresh strawberries into.. Follow that with a fresh made truffle or a piece of chocolate coated ginger.! The hotel spared nothing, because the food kept on being cooked and served at every little station until we left at 10:00. By then the empty wine bottles were stacked up in tubs and bins by the dozens and again, if you never got your fill of wine, it was your own fault. All the while, servers walked around, offering delectables from their trays. I was full after the first hour.!
Emil sampled loads of wine, but we both agreed the best was one red Foch from the winery in Kelowna called House of Roses it had won 8 awards and when you sipped it, you could see why...No bitter aftertaste, not too sweet and it flowed over your pallet as smooth as ever. I even had a taste and quite loved it...now if all red wines were as wonderful, I could graduate into red wine! I did taste a few whites and then went to H20..I was the DD, so I was good!
Ok...nighty night...My back is still giving me some hell, asking for horizontal...Love ya all!

Nice visit with Auntie Mary and Uncle PAul

I told Auntie, she could leave her rollers in... I had a yummy bowl of borsht and a nice visit today with Aunti Mar and Uncle PAul, on my way home from Vernon. I thought I'd try Highway 6 from Vernon to Needles, then across the ferry to Fauquier and on to Nakusp. The route is quite wiggly and winding, but considering the day was sunny and very pleasant and I was in no rush... it worked out perfectly, and gave me an opportunity to see my favourite Aunt and Uncle.

And here is my new baby...a little IPOD Nano...8 gigs! It kept me company for the whole trip ,listening to Coffee Break Spanish and my tunes.. Que tal...and Buenas Notche! Way too late...I'll fill in the blanks tomorrow about the rest of my little trip with my visit to Sandra's and to Ronda and Johns... Meanwhile, enjoy the pics....

Gramma Lynn with her kididdles

There's always room on the knee for one more!

Brand Spanky New Boy! Job well done, Nadine and Dick!

Wait a minute...who is the real Princess here!

Lynn sent me these cute pics of her new grandson and her having fun with the Princess... One big happy family that has grown by one more..., so now Lynn and Bob have five grandchildren... Ok, looks like it will be awhile before I catch up! Good thing we are all pretty close...I can have fun with all of them too!...which begs the question...When do we get to play with the Babies???

Meanwhile, Joyce is on her way to Edmonton today...if she got beyond the Salmo-Creston.. I heard it was a real mess with a heavy snowfall happening... She at least had her snowtires on. I'll calll Morgan in the am to see how she did...or someone can email me...I always worry about my sister, but she is a pretty tenacious driver , making me think she did fine.
I hope to get away myself, at the end of the week... but no snowtires so I will be checking the weather reports! Might have to put them on!
In the first place, I have come down with a cold that came right out of the blue. I gardened all Saturday afternoon and felt fine, and then whammo...on Sunday, I was sneezing and blowing my nose like crazy all day and my sleep Sunday night was the pits.. plus the power bumped on and off seven times at 3:30 am...What was with that? Probably some newbie at the controls.
So tonight I still don't feel wonderful, but loaded up on drugs at Walmart after work, thus my nights' sleep ought to be improved.
Have a good week.
I am slowly making small accomplishments in my upstairs... I repainted my white frames that used to be all oak finished. Now I have begun to fill some of the picture frames with photos...my latest batch was from the Grand Canyon and I must say , they look pretty good. I have a big poster from the Grand Canyon, as well, and Sonia had it backed for me at Costco. Once I get the poster , I can hang all of the pics in one of the bedrooms... sort of like surround sound... only this will be surround Canyon:-)
ok...to bed, before I nod off.. g'night!

Burning slash above Redfish

Just above Ed and Linda's house, across the lake from us, on Thursday

It started small , but ended up in a raging inferno in an area that had been logged last summer. I thought rage would surely take out every tree on the mountain,if it kept moving uphill at its present speed.

This is when a huge pile of slash was ignited. By nightfall, it looked as tho the whole mountain would burn up.
Fortunately, the big pile burned rapidly and the fire that seemed to be going straight up the mountain and into the trees, just subsidedinto a hot red glow by midnight. This morning it was still smoldering and tonight, there are only a few hot-spots left.

Coming home from work on Wednesday, I could this slash burning up the mountain above Sitkum creek. In total the forestry conducted three big burns over two days. This is to clear the forest floor of debris, to prevent a real fire from taking off, during the next dry season.

New Bling

A beautiful Cherry Amber ring...beautiful on a real finger, that is! There is also a matching pendant.. quite gorgeous! This pic doesn't do it justice.. It is bright like the last cherry ring.

Another ,in yellow amber...both are about $79. 00

This is a cute cherry amber

Not such a great pic, but shows three new cubic Zirconia rings...they are all shiny and nice...
The good news is that I took more ring pics today and will try to upload a few more. The amber jewellery has been flying out of the store already...

Halo Moon

If you were looking at the full moon last, you may have seen it get surrounded by a fluffy cloud that then started to glow with a rim of pink...very beautiful... We are also supposed to be in a good position to see Northern Lights over the next few nights...so look up!
I guess the sky has to clear up before we can see anything...it is drizzling out this morning! Have a nice day...and just as a ps...Correna's chow mein turned out fabulous! Way to go girl. Stay tuned for some of the new amber rings we received at the Bling shop!
