ATV Gone Amuck

Above , you can see the ATV stuck in the mud, on the beach...the neighbour's mudflat to the east of us.

Below, the pic shows the remaining tracks from the above ATVjust before it came to a dead stop below our neighbours beach, where the water has receded. Instead of little sink holes like those in the below photo, he was into the mud clear up to his axles and then some. Him and his riding partner had to abandon the machine and go walk for help. I think they never lived too far away, because an hour or so later, they came with another ATV and winched out the one stuck in the muck. Yes, beware when stepping into unknown silt flats... it is pure anadulterated mud!

You can see here where they crossed the lagoon... I can't believe they weren't sunk in here... the bank on the far side is fairly steep... Maybe they winched out... I don't know... It is the kind of mud I wouldn't care to step into if I were stuck!

Sheryl, Emil's replacement at HEU came out with her beau, Mike and joined us for a BBQ... mmm-mmm-good. We tried for a game of Mexican train, but after three rounds we were all dozing off...( * It was taking longer than usual for some reason....***)
The weather was deluxe on Saturday and again today, tho, it seems to be in decline at the moment. Emil pruned trees with Peter's guidance and a few suggestions from me this morning. I got out into my front flower bed yesterday for a bit... damn deer ate my hyacynths...as well as the crocus, with the exception of about three!

LAWNMOWER for SALE...
Here is Emil's old ride'm Lawn mower. I am going to advertise it on UsedKootenays.com..$650.00, 14 h.p. and comes with the grass catcher and has a 42" mower deck. It is a Craftsman from Sears. Let us know if anyone is interested.

Happy Spring!

Janice and Gord brought me a springy bouquet of dafs and tulips that were nearly closed...today they are bursting at the seams and beautiful. Thanks for bringing a bit o spring into my house!

It was a spring like day today ,once the rain in Nelson cleared. Out came the sun and we opened the door for fresh air. I even saw a few gals in crop pants today! Yea! It is supposed to reach 20 * on Saturday. I am looking forward to some heat alright. I'd love to get outdoors and attack my front flowerbeds.
I am so stiff from my little bike ride on Saturday, that one would think my limbs were eighty years old, instead of their real age. Poor Silky is still grumbling about her stiff back as well. She seemed happy enough to go for a little walk this afternoon, but after bending down to eat her dinner, she caused herself pain ( in her back ) I think. If things don't perk up, she will make a trip to the vet on Thursday. I think she has pulled a muscle in her loer back... must be getting old like the rest of us... she'd be 63 in dog years, this MAy.

Tomorrow I am off to see the ear nose and throat specialist in Trail. Maybe he can seal off my mouth:-)

Oh yes...and tomorrow:

Dat de de Daaaaaaaaaa....

DA-de DA-de Da.........

Its Lynn's birthday... Happy Birthday to her... and many more... I'll personally wish her a HAppy day when and if I see her.
So ,on tht note. I think I'll grab my magazine and head to bed so I can get an early start.

Me Pondering..

What does one wear to an ear ,nose and throat specialist? Certainly not a turtle neck! I better ditch the IPOD too...and how about the red lipstick... Say Awweeeee

Real Lemon

I had to take one more photo of Janice's lemon to make everyone aware that what we are buying in stores are called Lemons, but they must be the rejects they pick before they have had time to grow up into the heavenly beauty that JAnice grew...right in her living -room! Check out how to grow your own...but be prepared they might grow twenty feet tall. This is a dwarf variety that Janice has.

While Silky rested outside tonight on the sidewalk, the mom and her two yearlings came on by to take a look at the white fluff ball. I had a good laugh from inside the house as I watched the mom crane her head and neck forward to see what Silky was all about... That or she ws checking to see hwat remained of my crocus. Bloomed one day,and munched off the next ,except for the odd one tucked under a bush. Must be as good as a fresh picked salad!

Silky, oblivious to the deer behind her. She wasn't in a mood to be moving much anyhow...her back end is still sore . Being the wimp she is, she trembles at the thought of pain. We know she wasn't run over! We'll haul her off to the vet if she fails to improve. So far, her vitals are still pretty good..( ie...doesn't turn down a cookie)

The new crescent moon tonight...a sliver of silver below the earthshine that reflected onto the remained of the moon. Unfortunately, my camera didn't pick that up...but you can look out side tomorrow night when the moon comes up and you can see the point of the crescent pass through the Plaiedes ( Seven Sisters) ( looks like a little tiny dipper constellation in the sky usually straight overhead or a bit to the south.) See Spaceweather.com for better instructions!

Lemon Zest for Life and Salmon Sauce recipe

Last night we had JAnice and Gord and Linda and Ed over for Salmon dinner. As you can see below, Janice really does have a zest for life...always laughing ! She brought us those beautiful huge lemons for the salmon...and guess where they came from? Right off her very lemon tree in her living room! This amazes me! The lemons were giants, full of juice ( and seeds) and were mildly flavoured... a beautiful accompianment for the fish. In the pic below Janice is showing us where the lemons aught to go! Thanks Janice for fresh lemons!

Here is Emil, Linda, Gord, ashley (with no moustache) and a peak of Janice

Emil and Linda

Linda's hubby Ed, and Janice

Well, I managed to get the dinner onto the table in good time... Always tricky with fish and fresh veggies like aspargus. I did the fish with Kevin's salmon sauce recipe... made with Kraft Mayonaise... very yummy topping for salmon... then we had rice, aspargus, green snap peas and carrots and my now famous strawberry orange salad with raspberry dressing over fresh mixed greens... delicious.. I think the recipe for that one is on my sidebar. it can be made with spinach , but these days I prefer those bins of fresh greens for about 5 bucks...loads of lettuce and for the 7 people here, I used about a half of the bin of greens and it was the perfect amount.
So here is the salmon sauce recipe:

Kervin's Salmon Sauce
2 cups of Miracle whip ( not the light variety)
enough ketchup to make it turn pink when you stir it together
3 green onions chopped
3 dill pickles finely chopped
a few tablespoons of chopped dill
salt and pepper
and here is where you can get creative
Add either or : a can of drained shrimp; drained crab; fake crab; scallops; or mixed seafood ( I used the fake lobster last night ( a small package) . Also fresh shrimp or frozen cooked shrimp that have been thawed and drained and dried off a bit ( no tails or shells)
So last night I used one of thse bags of shrimp from Safeway and one small package of the fake lobster chunks).
You stir all of the seafood into the mayonaise mixture. This can be done ahead of time and kept in the fridge in a four cup measuring cup.
Eventually ,you will top the cooked salmon with the Mayonaise mixture and bake in the oven at 350* until the top starts to bubble and brown ( about 15 minutes) .So have your bottom part of your broiler pan or a cookie sheet with sides, lined with foil, and sprayed with PAm and ready for your fish and sauce ,after the fish comes off the BBQ and is deboned)

To cook a whole salmon, take off the head, then the easiest way is to butterfly the fish open by carefully cutting alongside the back bone right from the head end down to the tail end as far as you can without slicing your fingers. Open the fish wide open, flesh side up. the bones will be attached to the back bone on one side of the fish and on the other side, the bones will be cut. Slide the fish skin down, onto a slice of PAmmed foil. Season a bit with lemon pepper and dill and either spray with Pam or brush lightly with oil.
Have the BBQ fired up to high...

Gather the tinfoil up to the fish so it outlines it neatly. ( Don't cover it) Slide your fish with the tinfoil under it, onto the BBQ. Cook for about ten minutes with the lid down, ( Or you can broil the fish in your oven) until the flesh turns white under the bones, and then you can lift the rack of bones off the one side...just lift the tail up and peel the whole bone rack off the fish. This will only work when the fish has cooked immediately around the bones. On the other side of the fish where their is no backbone...just slide a steak knife or fork under the bones and lift the bones off. Voila...your fish
will be deboned. Don't worry if it isn't cooked all the way through...this is good, because it will finish cooking once the auce is on it and it goes back into the oven.

Bring the fish inside and peel off the tinfoil from under it while sliding it onto another PAmmed tinfoiled pan. I use my broiler pan or a cookie sheet,as described above.
Have your oven ready at 350*
Pour the seafood MAyonaise sauce over the fish, covering it entirely .
Pop the whole thing back in the oven for about another fifteen minutes until the top starts to bubble and turn golden a bit. If the fish is giantly huge...like ten pounds, then it could take longer to finish cooking. You just don't want to dry it out by overcooking it. Our salmon was about 4 pounds, I'd say...and it fed 7 people with little waste. If the fish appears cooked and the sauce isn't too bubbly, turn on the broiler for 1 or 2 minutes to make that happen...but beware, it could burn up in a flash.

Although, sounding mildly complicated, I always debone my salmon that way. Less bones in the end. Once the bones are off, a person could re-season the fish with dill and lemon pepper or with teryaki and brown sugar, and then continue to BBq it until it is cooked... ALways on high heat about 5 minutes per inch of fish.

If you have salmon fillets, then the bones are already out and you just go ahead and cook it with the Mayonaise sauce on top... it will take a little longer, but it will all turn out yummy in the end. Who would have thunk you could cook MAyonaise???

I finished the dinner off with carrot cake, topped with So good icecream adn fresh sliced strawberries. YUm... I might have to have caarrot cake for breakfast!
I see Emil isn't moving too fast this am.
We got into a Game of Train until Gord couldn't take it anymore and Ashley had to leave, then we palyed six handed Euchre untilt he girls lost miserabley... Emil and I had only tried it once before at JAnice's . Euchre is a card game that requires wou to think in five directions at once... We had two decks of cards, using from the 9's up, so double of each card. If you play no trump, no problem. If you play trump, then the JAcks turn into your top power card. But you can use the opposite jacks in the same color ( Diamond with hearts or clubs with spades) as your helper Power Bowers...Right and Left Bowers actually. Thus a good hand doesn't only consist of Aces, but also of Jacks, is you are playing trump. Thre are other rules that come into play, but we never got so far as to use them. In the end, the party didn't exactly quit till sometime around ten bottles of wine...:-)

Somewhere in all of that, my doggy hurt herself and was having a yelp every time she tried to jump down off the couch or where-ever. I gave her a teaspoon of Benadril to come her down ( you can), and she took herself down to the basement and slept there all by herself all night. This morning, she was trembling when I tried to figure out what was wrong... Still can't figure it out... somewhere in her lower back or hip joint maybe. (All legs move, she can go down stairs, but maybe not up them) She went outside and did her jobs, then wouldn't move. I carried her back to the lawn and she headed for the car. Same thing last night. She wants to run away from her pain. Dogs will do that, so never let them of the leash when the dog is in some kind of pain or they will take off, thinking they can run away from it.
Now,after another half teaspoon of benadril, she is asleep in her bed. Bichons are very touchy when it comes to pain. The least little thing will make her think she is in mortal pain, and then one day she will be fine, forgetting there ever was pain. I will keep tabs on her and if she persists to be in pain, I'll take her to the vet with my last week's earnings...

New Gadgets...

I am trying out a few new gadgets from Google to put up on my sidebar...for one, the Kraft Recipe finder... maybe it will be helpful once you have tried all of my recipes:-)
Also, I have a calender and clock... I always wanted one, but could never find a good combo, so we'll try that out. These are all available in a Draft kind of Blogger that they are trying out, so I thought I'd give a couple a whirl. There are over 5000 Google gadgets in one section, so it is hard to choose what to put on the sidebar. Tentatively speaking, one could have two sidebars and many more gadgets. That would mean a change to my layout, which would take some time...a premium thing these days!
For your very own google gadgets, you can choose to have them floating on your desktop with a Google Desktop. that you can download from that link. Once you have the desktop, you can add google gadgets for some fun. Any questions, give me a call...

Joyce and I went to Touchstones Museum and took in the SEED show. It had examples of all kinds of exotic seeds that are mostly used in jewellery making. The size of the seeds were quite amazing...as big as your fist, or a pod the length of your arm... all in all , worth taking in.After the show, we strolled over to the Hume Library and ordered our usual three appies and a beer, and then enjoyed the food while we chatted. I am very much loving chicken wings in Thai Sweet Chili sauce. Not too hot and yet very tasty.
We called it a night and still it was after 8 when I got home. Now I am ready for my beddy... good night all...and sweet dreams!

Tuesday morning...far cry from Sunday

A leak in the sandbar

Fresh water clams can sometimes be found in abundance along the north shore...but this is all I came across

Here is our dock...the rest to the left is mud.

Beautiful Sunday

The lake is the lowest it has been in years, exposing the sandbar that is jsut to the west of us. Often, boats get hung up on it ,just before the water drops low enough to see it. Another good reason to take a boating course...or to navigate to the next dolphin...
Back to Sunday...The sun was shining and the day was gorgeous! Emil and I walked clear out to the furthest tip of the snadbar, taking us close to 2/3rds of the way across the lake! Last year,we hardly even saw the sandbar!

Silk was in her glory ,once we got close to the shore. She was in the water in seconds!

This is looking into the sun...giving it some far off planentary look

Note the legs on Silk...mudballs, I should say. I had to bath her and scrub her down about three times ,and even after that ,she still had mud caked into her fur on her legs. I must correct myself...clay.

Here we are...almost across the lake. Our friend's, ed and Linda are building the big ( grey) long shop ( upper left of photo) Their house is sandy coloured and tucked behind the trees., They were in the hot-tub waving, but we couldn't see them even tho we were waving at them anyhow!
This morning , I walked back out, about half way across. Not nearly as muddy because the mud was still frozen!
Enjoy another beautiful day int he neighbourhood... Yes, we got dumped on, on Monday!

Sunday Morning

Look closely and maybe you will spot two ducks (double click on the photo to make it larger)

The trees are still cloaked in snow

At least there are glimpses of blue sky this morning and sunshine...
perfect for a walk, so that is where we are headed as soon as I drink my coffee.
